NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH INFORMATION
To all Neighborhood Watch Members,
From March 8, 2009 to present the Fishers Police Department has taken approximately 9 prowler-related reports from citizens living in the various neighborhoods near the intersection of 126th Street and Hoosier Road . The overwhelming majority of these reported cases have occurred during very early morning hours, often between the hours of 2am – 4am. Neighborhoods included in these reports are: Somerset , Sumerlin Trails, Rolling Meadow, Sandstone Lakes , Oak Hall, and the Bristols.
A white male subject has been observed on a few occasions attempting to peer into windows and has also been seen fleeing on foot after being startled by homeowners or passing vehicles. The only further description of the suspect is that he is said to be approximately 6’ 1” tall, muscular build, and has been seen wearing dark clothing including a stocking cap. The suspect has also attempted to gain entry into various homes by checking various doors and windows (particularly back sliding glass/patio doors).
Of particular concern is that at least two homeowners have reported seeing this person inside their home during the mentioned time frames and he is believed to have been inside a third home. Fortunately in each case the male left without further incident or injury to anyone.
The intent of this message is certainly not meant to instill fear in anyone. Our goal is to simply raise awareness and to encourage all homeowners to be extra vigilant and proactive. Please know that all of our Patrol Officers are aware and have been increasing their individual patrols in these neighborhoods. Our Investigations Division is also actively working these cases.
As always, help us in our efforts by reporting anything or anyone in your neighborhoods that may seem suspicious in any way. Remember, if it seems suspicious at first, follow your initial instinct and call without delay for an Officer to investigate the matter. Avoid the temptation to ‘justify’ or ‘explain away’ the circumstance.
There are many safety and crime-prevention tips available to the homeowner but please do not overlook the more obvious precautionary measures such as completely shutting and locking all doors and windows overnight. Leave outdoor lights on, consider timers for lights and/or motion sensing flood lights (and periodically check to ensure each is working properly). If you have an alarm installed in your home, be sure to make use of it by activating it before bedtime.
Most importantly, know your neighbors and look out for one another. Encourage everyone to become an active participant in your individual Neighborhood Watch Program and sign up for the Town of Fishers free online notification system Fishers Alert by visiting www.fishers.in.us/police and simply click on the Fishers Alert icon.
